Scout Annual Camp 2018

Dear Parents,

The scouts will be back soon, Wed 7th Feb, but in the mean time I would ask you to put your mind to this year’s annual camp.

This year we are going to JamboRí-2018, this is an international scout camp being held in Stradbally, Co Laois.

JamboRí-2018-1 <- is a link to an information sheet.

Scout Jamborees are fantastic experiences for the scouts where they will meet scouts from all over the world.

As this is a camp organised by Scouting Ireland the cost and dates are out of our control as are the instalment due dates for the camp fees.

Key Information;

·        When?
Wednesday 25th July to Thursday 2nd August

·        Where?
Stradbally Hall, Co. Laois. (Electric Picnic site)

·        Cost?

€320 for the camp, this includes camping fees,  food and all activities.
€50 for transport to and from the camp and other outlays associated with camps.

·        Camp Fees Due Date?
€120 Nov 2017 (extended by scouting Ireland)
€100 Jan 2018
€100 April 2018
€50 June 2018

While the Aghada Group can help in meeting these deadlines with group funds we need commitment from the scouts for attendance.

Note: All fees paid to Scouting Ireland are non-refundable.

We need confirmation by 14th February if your scout is attending (or not) this will allow us confirm our place at the camp. You can text or call Kevin. Following that we would ask for the fees to be paid as soon as possible.

As always please talk to us if the deadlines causes problems and we will do everything we can to facilitate you.

Yours in Scouting,

When: Sun. Nov 27th

GPS co-ords: 52.3317768,-8.1846534

  • Meet there 10:00am (it’s ~1hr from Aghada)
  • Pickup: 16:30 at Kings Yard.
  • Uniforms not required but neckerchief MUST be worn
  • Galtees are currently covered in snow
    – Be prepared, see gear list below.

Directions: Aghada to Kings Yard

  • Aghada
  • Get on M8 from R630 and N25 24 min (27.0 km)
  • Follow M8 to N73. Take exit 12 from M8 27 min (47.8 km)
  • Take R639 to your destination in Limerick 14 min (7.2 km)
  • Kings Yard, Kilbehenny, Co. Limerick

What to wear:

1)   Light leggings or walking trousers
Note: Jeans and cotton type tracksuit bottoms are not suited to a hike as they soak in water becoming very heavy, difficult to move in and keep the wearer cold which is dangerous. They also take ages to dry. Walking trousers have a certain amount of water resistance and are quick drying.

2)   Layer up with 2 light tops – breathable base layers are best – again no cotton because once it gets wet it stays wet. (You should have a warmer layer in the bag)
Start the walk feeling a little cool – you will soon warm up!

3)   Boot socks (these are thicker than normal socks and offer better protection against blisters)

4)   Good walking boots (not wellies or runners)
Bear in mind that we are walking mostly in the mountains and much of the time on boggy rough ground or through heather so you must have appropriate hiking boots. A twisted ankle can ruin the day for the whole group.

Must Haves:

1)      Backpack (the type that is worn on both shoulders)
2)      Rain gear (waterproof pants and jacket)
3)      Warm light fleece
4)      Pair of gloves and a warm hat (good idea to have spares)
5)      Blister plasters and spare socks
6)      Sun cream and sun hat (if needed)
7)      Any personal medication
8)      Lunch (a sandwich and something else, bar of chocolate, fruit, nuts). A warm drink is important in winter. Include some emergency rations in case the day takes longer than expected.
9)      1 to 2 litres of water (at least 2lts of water will be needed for a 6hrs day in summer)

Other stuff that might make your day more enjoyable.

1)      Bag liner (if your backpack does not have a waterproof outer bag, this is important for any spare clothes)
2)      Gaiters (if the walk is likely to be boggy / mucky)
3)      Emergency rations
4)      Walking poles
5)      Camera
6)      A change of clothes and shoes back in the car

Safety Gear
7)      Whistle
8)      Basic first aid kit (group has one but good habit for scouts to have their own)
9)      Head torch & battery
10)    Survival bag
